Tucked away at the end of a road in Shelby County is Hargadon Farms. A family operation at its core, Pat Hargadon and his wife Terry have raised their children, Patrick and Kelsey, on the farm. According to Pat, a farm lifestyle is the best way to raise a family. You teach work and responsibility, but also develop an appreciation for the land. But what really makes Hargadon’s operation special is right on either side of his home resides his and his wife’s parents, truly driving home the family impact of farming. Hargadon laughed and exclaimed that “it was all fun and games until when the kids were little and got mad, they would just walk over to their grandparents’ house.” However, for being able to experience this lifestyle with his family alongside him, Hargadon calls himself the luckiest man in Shelby County. He says his mentor used to claim that, but he has since taken over the title.
To the Hargadon family, farming is a legacy business. Pat’s dad started the farm and now Pat is currently in the process of handing the business down to his children, both of whom are ready to be in the family business. Hargadon expressed how the love for the lifestyle made it hard to step back, but he is excited for his children to have their own opportunity.

Hargadon Farms is a cow-calf operation that covers roughly 900 acres. What does an average day look like on the farm in Shelby County? The Hargadons take pride in checking their cattle twice a day. With a spring and a fall herd, the Hargadons always have calves on the ground. Thus, making sure all cattle have the best care and attention is a feat not overlooked on Hargadon Farms. According to Pat, at Hargadon Farms, the family and support staff get attached to the cattle. Hargadon expressed how you come to appreciate all the work the cattle do. Thus, Hargadon Farms appreciates Beef Solutions, because they know that after the cattle are taken out of the Hargadon care they will be treated kindly, and eventually the beef will be served right here in Kentucky.
Hargadon emphasized that Beef Solutions is important for Kentucky agriculture, because all farmers need to have pride in the products they make. Beef Solutions emphasizes this because it creates an extra level of pride with products staying here in the Commonwealth. Additionally, the program wants good quality animals, thus Pat says this inspires better products among all producers. Therefore, in regards to Hargadon Farms, Pat said Beef Solutions was an opportunity they couldn’t pass up.
